Wax Lines are drawn on white fabric. Only the areas that appear black are painted with black dye. The fabrik is then boiled in hot water to remove the wax, and entire fabric is deyd again with sumi ink.
As the fabric dries, the sumi ink color changes from black to gray.
The black dye blends with the sumi ink, creating a deeper black than pure black.
